One hundred years on this hillside

The house that watched a century

The original structure is older. In the 1920s Sir John Bayley rebuilt the hall to the Tudor-revival design you arrive at today. He founded Wrekin College a mile down the road.

The Lander family lived here as a private residence in the 1930s before relocating to Sunnycroft, now a National Trust property a short walk away. The Lander Bar is named for them.

John and Marjorie Wilson opened the hall as a hotel and country club in the 1960s. The opening ballroom was attended by Billy Wright, Wolves and England captain, with his wife Joy Beverley of the Beverley Sisters. Mid-century glamour at the foot of the hill.

Eighty covers, contemporary British, lake views from most tables. Open from 6.30pm Tuesday through Sunday.

Walk out the door, the mountain starts

The Wrekin begins here

The grounds back onto the lower slopes of The Wrekin, a Shropshire Hills National Landscape and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The path to the summit starts five minutes from reception. Ironbridge Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site is a ten minute drive.

Most guests don't realise. The hotel isn't near the walk. It is the start of it.
