Maileg began in Denmark in 1999, and the whole thing runs on one lovely idea: that a mouse needs a life. So there are mouse beds, mouse kitchens, mouse suitcases and mouse bakeries, all built to the same tiny scale.

They arrive tucked in matchboxes and little baskets, and children look after them like family. Grown-ups are usually worse. We have watched more than one parent quietly start a collection of their own.

Moulin Roty was started in 1972 by a group of friends in France, and it still feels handmade in the best way. Every range has its own illustrated world and its own set of characters, drawn rather than designed by committee.

Dinkums come from Olli Ella, and they are made to be carried everywhere. They are soft, weighted and poseable, so they flop and sit like a real little person rather than a stiff doll.

Le Toy Van is a British family business that started in 1995, and it shows. Their wooden castles, dolls' houses, garages and market stalls are properly painted and properly built, and they take a real beating.

This is the stuff that gets played with for years and then goes up into the loft to wait for the next child. Which is rather the whole idea.

The wooden railway that's been delighting children since 1884, and still does.

Brio started life in Sweden back in 1884 as a family business, and the wooden railway that made them famous arrived in the 1950s. It has barely changed since, because it did not need to.

Here is the trick: the track you buy today still fits the track in your parents' attic. Nothing else in toys really does that.

Vilac has been making toys in the Jura since 1911, in the part of France that has turned wood into toys for centuries. Their lacquered finish is unmistakable, glossy and bright and lovely to hold.

The original teddy bear maker, with the famous button in the ear.

Steiff was founded in Germany in 1880 by Margarete Steiff, and the teddy bear as we know it came out of that workshop in the early 1900s. Every genuine one carries the Button in Ear, which is the oldest trademark of its kind in toys.

A Steiff is not really a purchase, it is a beginning. They are made to be given, kept, and handed on.

Traditional mohair bears, handmade right here in Shropshire for generations.

This one is close to home. Merrythought has been making teddy bears in the Ironbridge Gorge since 1930, and is Britain's last remaining traditional teddy bear maker. They are still cut, stitched and finished by hand, by people, a few minutes from our Ironbridge door.

We are quietly very proud to sell them. When you buy a Merrythought from us, the bear has travelled about as far as you have.

Charlie Bears arrived in 2005 and built a following that is genuinely devoted. Each bear has a name and a personality, and collectors wait for the new releases the way other people wait for concert tickets.

They are big, weighty, characterful things. People do not buy one. That is the running joke, and it is completely true.
