Roof leaking? Call the Shrewsbury and Telford roofers.

Slating, tiling, leadwork, flat roofs and guttering across Shrewsbury, Telford and Shropshire.

Looking down on a freshly slated hipped roof with lead-covered hips, where it meets an older slate roof above a timber-framed opening, with a van and builders' bags in the yard beyond.
New slate hips, laid by us. Every photo on this site is our own work.

What's under your slates

A slate roof is built in layers, from the rafters up. Here's what each one does.

A slate roof is built in layers, from the rafters up. Here's what each one does.

  1. Rafters

The timbers that carry the whole roof. Everything else is laid on them.

  2. Breathable membrane

Goes over the rafters and drapes into the gutter: a second line against wind-driven rain.

  3. Battens

Fixed across the rafters at the slate gauge. Every slate is nailed to one.

  4. Slate courses

Laid from the eaves up, each course covering the nails of the one below. Re-roofing and new roofs

  5. Stepped lead flashing

Where the roof meets a chimney, lead is stepped into the brick joints so water can't get behind it. Leadwork

  6. The ridge

Caps the top of the roof, where the two slopes meet.

  7. Fascia, soffit and gutter

At the eaves they carry the water off the roof and away from the walls. Fascias, soffits and guttering

  8. Every layer has a job

When a roof leaks, one of them has failed. Finding which one is ours.

Still busy on local roofs. In August 2026 we were looking for another roofer's mate for local work, after similar posts in October 2025 and July 2024. See our Facebook page
